The Trajan Way by bike
Self-guided bike tour - 7 Days/ 6 Nights
"Via Traiana" or "Trajan Way" refers to an ancient Roman road built by the Emperor Trajan in the early 2nd century AD. It connected Beneventum (modern Benevento) to Brundisium (modern Brindisi).
Our cycle tour will take you to discover beautiful coastal cities and the Apulian hinterland, retracing this ancient and historic path. The tour starts from Trani, charming coastal city with its Cathedral dedicated to San Nicola the Pilgrim. Leaving Trani you will cycle through the cities of the great cathedrals: Andria, Corato and Ruvo di Puglia, Terlizzi, Giovinazzo until you reach the regional capital: the enchanting city of Bari. Lose yourself in the noisy streets of the old city of Bari, savor street food like panzerotti, sgagliozze and popizze. Don't forget to cross Via Arco Basso, where friendly grannies will teach you how to make the typical Apulian pasta: orecchiette. A pleasant ride along the coast then will take you to Mola di Bari and then to Polignano a Mare, “the Pearl of the Adriatic”. Its historic centre, made of narrow lanes and whitewashed houses, is perched on a cliff overlooking the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic Sea. Not everyone knows that the city of Polignano was the birthplace of the singer-songwriter Domenico Modugno, with his famous song "Volare oh oh". Walking through the streets overlooking the sea you will want to sing it too! We continue along the coast, arriving first at the tourist port of Monopoli, an enchanting city with its castle on the sea and its rich history, then at Savelletri and the ancient disappeared City of Egnazia. A visit to the Archaeological Park of Egnazia cannot be missed in your travel program. The park contains an entire part of the Appian - Trajan Way. The tour will take you to discover the city of Ostuni, famous for its whitewashed walls it is called "the White City". The last stretch will take you to the end of the Appian - Trajan Way, that is: to the port city of Brindisi. At the end of this ancient street stands the Roman column, you will then have reached the seafront of Brindisi, the city of two castles. Before reaching the city of Brindisi, you will pass through Carovigno and its fascinating medieval castle and the Torre Guaceto Natural Reserve: a protected marine area.
