The Coast of Trulli - Via Francigena, Trulli & Sea

 Self-guided hiking tour - 8 Days / 7 Nights
The tour follows some stretches of the Via Francigena and takes the traveler to discover the Costa dei Trulli. We start from Fasano to reach the Arckeological Park of Egnazia, where some sections of the Via Appia - Traiana will still be visible. The tour begins on the Adriatic coast and its two pearls: the city of Monopoli and the village perched on the sea of Polignano a Mare. The hiking tour continues inland, crossing the medieval village of Conversano, a fascinating city that watches over the surrounding area from the top of its hill. The last stages will take you to the Itria valley, first to Castellana Grotte which houses one of the most beautiful karst treasures in Italy: the Castellana Caves, after Castellana you continue to Putignano, a city famous for its historic Carnival, at this point you will have almost arrived at your destination: Alberobello, a UNESCO city since 1996 with its trulli.

Itinerary

Day 1. ARRIVAL IN FASANO
FASANO, located on the border between Salento and the Land of Bari. Surrounded by olive groves, orchards, vineyards and large farms. Its historic center is a maze of narrow streets and whitewashed houses. Overnight stay in Fasano.

Day 2. FASANO - savelletri - MONOPOLI
Distance: 19 km; elevation: 100 m; terrain: gravel/paved; time: 5 h

Briefing. A member of our staff will accompany you from your accommodation in Fasano to Savelletri. Once in Savelletri, you will begin to walk along one of the oldest roads in Europe: the Via Francigena. Along this track you will have the opportunity to visit the Archeological Park of Egnazia, which testifies to the history of Egnazia, an active commercial center of the ancient world: the most extensive example of a Roman city in Puglia. The track will take you directly to one of the gems of the Mediterranean: Monopoli with its sixteenth-century castle on the sea. Overnight stay in Monopoli.

Day 3. MONOPOLI - POLIGNANO A MARE
Distance: 14 km; elevation: 100 m; terrain: gravel; time: 3 h
Even today's track follows the Via Francigena. Totally coastal unlike the Via Appia, in ancient times it saved a day's walk. After leaving Monopoli, you reach Polignano a Mare crossing the beautiful coves with golden sand and the Sella Bridge. A totally natural bridge overlooking the blue Adriatic sea. You will finally arrive in Polignano a Mare: the pearl of the Adriatic. A stop at its balconies overlooking the sea and a photo with the statue of Domenico Modugno ( the famous songwriter of the song "Volare oh oh") are a must! Overnight stay in Polignano a Mare.

Day 4. POLIGNANO A MARE - CONVERSANO
Distance: 12 km; elevation: 220 m; terrain: gravel/paved; time: 4 h
Today's walk will first take you to the small fishermans' village of San Vito with its beautiful little harbour. Don't miss the opportunity to visit the sea caves of Polignano with our boat tour! The small port was once controlled by the Benedictine monks who lived in the Abbey which houses both the relics of Saint Vito and an underground oil mill from the Roman era. You will understand that you are walking along a Roman road also thanks to the column located on the rocks. On the other hand, it retains the coastal tower from the sixteenth century, typical of the Apulian coastline, built as a defense against the Saracens invasions. The road will lead you to the medieval village, today the city of art of Conversano. Overnight stay in Conversano.

Day 5. CONVERSANO - CASTELLANA GROTTE
Distance: 16,5 km; elevation: 320 m; terrain: gravel/paved; time: 5 h
Conversano: city of the Acquaviva d'Aragona Counts, whose best known exponent is Giangirolamo II, the Guercio of Puglia. The Counts resided in the castle, where the seventeenth-century canvases of the cycle of "La Gerusalemme Liberata" by the artist Paolo Finoglio are exhibited. Starting from the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta in Conversano, the Way plunges into the luxuriant rural landscape of the countryside that leads to one of the most fascinating places in Puglia: Castellana with its marvelous caves. Discovered in 1938 by the speleologist Franco Anelli, they are one of the best known "Wonders of Puglia" in the world. Overnight stay in Castellana

Day 6. CASTELLANA GROTTE - PUTIGNANO
Distance: 10 km; elevation: 374 m; terrain: gravel/paved; time: 3h

Today's track being shorter allows you to visit the Caves of Castellana. The Castellana caves are a complex of underground cavities of karst origin, of considerable tourist interest, among the most beautiful and spectacular in Italy. They develop for a length of 3348 meters and reach a maximum depth of 122 meters from the surface. The site is open all year round. We therefore advise you to book a guided tour of the complete itinerary.

CASTELLANA CAVES -
Long Itinerary Distance: 3 km, depth; 122 m; terrain: rocky and wet; time: 1.5h
This stage will therefore lead you to the city of Putignano, known throughout Italy for being the site of one of the most important and celebrated carnivals in the nation.

Overnight stay in Putignano.

day 7. PUTIGNANO - ALBEROBELLO
Distance: 18 km; elevation: 249m; terrain: gravel/paved; time: 5h

The walk starts from the historic center of Putignano and enters the Valle d'Itria, characterized by the presence of trulli, dry-stone buildings known throughout the world. The final destination will be the symbolic city of this architectural structure, Alberobello, which has become a UNESCO heritage site. Here you can admire the largest concentration of trulli that characterizes two districts and a church, that of Sant'Antonio da Padova. Overnight stay in Alberobello.
